Two baby Robins entered our lives as the dead tree cavity they had their home in fell over. I have been using shoe boxes so far to house them, and I was looking for just these details on how to build a more permanent one. Many thanks for this.

aquired numerous metal file boxes used for index cards. a few years ago, i stumbled across a project that used them to create bird houses/nesting boxes. (referred to the file drawers pulling out being very helpful in the cleaning/up keep of) and can’t find it. any advice would be helpful. Thank you!

Be careful using metal file drawers to house birds. They can become overheated if in the direct sun.

Wow, this is very helpful. I can’t wait to have a tufted titmouse in my birdhouse, they have always been my favorite bird.

What style of bird house would be the best for cardinals? I have some that visit the tree in front of my window from time to time, and I think it would be a nice project over the holidays to build a little home for them. Perhaps it would entice them to visit more often! =] Help?

Cardinals prefer open nests in dense tree branches, bushes, or in (in our yard when I was growing up) bamboo. They don’t go for bird houses. You can plant some tree or bush that they like.

Cardinals do not nest in bird houses. You will want to look for a nesting shelf.

    Great tips, thanks.

I made a couple of bird houses out of gourds that I grew last summer. Can’t wait to make a couple more this coming summer, I love how they look.
